Our Vision
STATEMENT
“The vision of The Feuerle Collection is to create a total artwork, a Gesamtkunstwerk.
It breaks with the traditional way of showing art and it takes barriers away between cultures, ages, importance of past and importance of today. It leads the spectator to a different way of experiencing art through the senses.
The artworks have to speak for themselves without labels to bring the visitor into another world. A world with different cultures mixed in one space, art from contemporary to ancient, ignoring importance or age of each piece, letting the artworks correspond with the visitor and creating a new artwork.
The contemporary artwork becomes timeless, the ancient becomes contemporary, the two different artworks fuse with each other and create a new imaginative feeling.
It is my intention to ignore definitions like contemporary, modern or antique.
The different cultures create similar feelings or contradict the classic perspective, looking at an art piece as it is juxtaposed with something you would not expect or with something which is even breaking the harmony and, through that, it creates a new perspective on experiencing art.”
Désiré Feuerle
STATEMENT
“I see in Désiré’s curatorial vision and in this joint project of ours a profound respect for humanity—respect for different cultures, for different geographies, and for different moments in history.
The way Désiré conceived this exhibition allows for a spiritual, synesthetic experience that nurtures perception and inner attention toward the artworks and oneself. The absence of labels creates openness. It allows the artworks to speak directly, and it allows the visitor to encounter the pieces in a truly personal and deeply intimate way.
I have seen many exhibitions and museums throughout my life, but every time I encountered an exhibition curated by Désiré Feuerle, I found myself unable to leave it.
What touches me and motivates me about this project is how it transforms our visitors, and mostly very young ones, providing them with a place to disconnect from the outside world, where conversation and dialogue of different cultures and times is embraced. And nowadays I see a need for this.
Co-founding this institution meant, for me, embracing and committing to a way of showing art that focuses entirely on the experience of the visitor from an emotional, sensual, spiritual, and holistic perspective.
Furthermore, Feuerle Puig House is also a place without boundaries — a cross-cultural space where many cultures are united. It embodies dialogue beyond geography and beyond historical divisions. I personally think these two aspects respond to essential social needs of our time.”
Sara Puig
Collection
The Feuerle Collection is a non-profit organization in Berlin founded by Désiré Feuerle and Sara Puig in 2016.
It hosts exquisite, early Imperial Chinese stone and lacquer furniture and Chinese scholar furniture from the Han Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty, from 200 BC to the 17thC, juxtaposed with early Khmer sculptures from the 7th to the 13thC, and international contemporary art by Zeng Fanzhi, Nobuyoshi Araki, Anish Kapoor, Cristina Iglesias, and Adam Fuss.
Located in a former Second World War telecommunications bunker that has been renovated by British architect John Pawson, the institution encourages a conversation between different periods and cultures, and offers a new perception of ancient art.
As part of a 7,350m2 space, The Feuerle Collection has two main exhibition halls, a Sound Room, a Lake Room, and an Incense Room.
The Feuerle Collection is the first art institution in the world to present the Chinese Incense Culture. As one of China’s oldest traditions, dating back over 2,000 years, the Incense Ceremony is now presented as a contemporary art performance.
Désiré Feuerle, who comes from a contemporary art background, owned a gallery in the nineties in Cologne, Germany, where he pioneered juxtaposing ancient art with contemporary and modern art, as well as re-looking at antiques from a contemporary perspective.
Sara Puig is Founder of The Sara Puig Institute for the Arts and current President of the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona, where she has been a Trustee since 2014. From 1998 to 2013, she was Director of Fundación Francisco Godia in Barcelona, Spain.
