Additional information on performing artists and films

Artists

Makoto Inoue

Makoto Inoue is a Berlin-based Japanese media artist, techno producer, and stage director whose work bridges embodied performance, digital media, and Buddhist philosophy. Raised in a Nichiren Buddhist temple in Tokyo, his artistic practice is deeply informed by concepts of impermanence, ritual, and transformation. After an international career in physical theatre and corporeal mime spanning more than 25 countries, he expanded his focus to audiovisual works that merge fractal structures, minimal sound, and immersive spatial experiences. Through performance and media art, he explores new forms of shared perception beyond language and cultural boundaries.

Riko Sugama & Rita Sugama

Riko Sugama returns to Feuerle Puig House following her appearance in its main performance program in 2023. Originally from Okinawa and now based in Berlin, she is recognized for her refined approach to Ryūkyūan traditional performing arts. On this occasion, she is joined by her sister, Rita Sugama. Rooted in traditions handed down since the time of the Ryūkyū Kingdom, their performance brings together graceful dance, elegant costume, and delicately resonant song. Together, the sisters offer a performance shaped by refinement, memory, and the quiet beauty of Okinawa’s light, sea, and breeze.

Doppelmond / Naoko Kikuchi & Mieko Miyazaki

Naoko Kikuchi is a Frankfurt-based koto performer whose practice spans classical and contemporary Japanese music, as well as cross-cultural collaboration in Europe. Mieko Miyazaki is a Lyon-based shamisen and koto artist, composer, and performer known for combining Japanese traditional music with contemporary creation and international collaborations. Both artists are featured within the activities of Doppelmond-Sogetsusha e.V., a non-profit association established in 2024 by composer Tomoya Yokokawa. Its artistic vision is to create a resonant space between contemporary music and Japanese traditional music, creating a new musical aesthetic through commissioned works, concerts, and collaborative projects. The organization aims to bring together musicians and composers while expanding the repertoire of traditional instruments for future generations, supported through public and private music funding, as well as memberships and donations.

Sunmao

Site-specific contemporary dance performance by three Berlin-based Chinese & Taiwanese dancers/choreographers: Yuexuan Gui, Fu-Hsuan Shih, and Yuchen Xie.

The mortise-and-tenon joint, Sunmao 榋卫, is a structural principle of Ming and Qing furniture and timber architecture. Without nails, it uses the flexibility of wood to create stable yet responsive forms. Inspired by this logic, the performance approaches the body as a living structure of bones, joints, muscles, and breath, constantly shifting between support and imbalance. Through yielding, release, and reconfiguration, the body searches for new relations after displacement.

For this performance the artists will collaborate with artist Yang Linchi, playing the guqin, a Chinese string instrument, live.

The artists all have strong professional backgrounds within the Berlin/German contemporary dance scene (HZT Berlin, Palucca Dresden, Feuerle Puig House, and international productions and festival experience).

Yang Linchi

The artist is Yang Linchi (杨临池), a Berlin-based guqin musician. The guqin is one of the oldest Chinese string instruments and is closely associated with Chinese literati culture, meditation, and philosophical traditions. What is particularly interesting about his work is that he often places the guqin in dialogue with other artistic and musical traditions, creating contemporary interpretations while remaining rooted in the instrument’s historical context.

Temple Rat

Berlin-based composer and erhu player Temple Rat (梅郁鑫) presents a meditative live set composed of erhu, modular synths, and field recordings. Drawing on Taoist philosophy and Tang poetry, the performance unfolds as an ambient ritual—tracing the cyclical movement of water, memory, and time.

Fusing traditional Chinese instruments with contemporary sonic languages, Temple Rat creates immersive soundscapes that dissolve boundaries between past and present, ritual and rave. Her performances have been featured at Berghain, Art Biesenthal, and Boiler Room Shanghai.

Film Synopses

The Scent of Green Papaya

Set in 1950s Saigon, The Scent of Green Papaya follows Mùi, a young servant girl who grows up within two very different households, quietly observing the rhythms of daily life, love, and change. Through delicate imagery and an extraordinary attention to sound, texture, and gesture, the film transforms everyday moments into a deeply poetic meditation on memory, desire, and human connection. Directed by Tran Anh Hung, the film is celebrated for its visual elegance and contemplative storytelling. A landmark of Vietnamese cinema, it remains one of the most acclaimed and internationally recognized films from Vietnam.

All We Imagine as Light

Set in the vibrant yet isolating city of Mumbai, All We Imagine as Light follows three women of different generations as they navigate love, desire, friendship, and the pressures of contemporary life. As their personal journeys unfold, the film explores the emotional complexities of intimacy, independence, and belonging in a rapidly changing urban landscape. Blending everyday reality with moments of quiet lyricism and dreamlike beauty, director Payal Kapadia crafts a deeply human portrait of womanhood and connection. Widely acclaimed for its visual elegance and emotional depth, the film is a landmark achievement in contemporary Indian cinema.

Enter the Void

Enter the Void (2009), directed by Gaspar Noé, is a psychedelic drama set in the neon-lit nightlife of Tokyo. The film follows Oscar, a young American drug dealer who is fatally shot during a police raid. After his death, his consciousness drifts through the city in an out-of-body experience, observing the lives of those he left behind while revisiting memories from his childhood and past relationships. Told largely through a striking first-person perspective, the film combines immersive visuals with an exploration of life, death, memory, and human connection, creating a hallucinatory journey through consciousness and loss. Chosen by Gaspar Noé for his French-Japanese background, Ken Yasumoto shaped the immersive sonic worlds of Enter the Void and Love. He shaped the film’s entire sonic universe—from capturing the actors’ voices on set to crafting its atmospheric soundscape and delivering the final mix. His work forms the auditory heartbeat of Gaspar Noé’s most intimate and emotionally charged film.

Please note that this film contains explicit sexual content and is intended for adult audiences (18+). As the relationship deepens, the lovers become consumed by one another, blurring the lines between intimacy, possession, and self-destruction. Directed by Nagisa Oshima, the film challenges conventional representations of sexuality through its uncompromising vision and emotional intensity. Widely regarded as a landmark of world cinema, it remains one of the most influential, provocative, and controversial erotic art films ever made.

Please note that this film contains explicit sexual content and is intended for adult audiences (18+). A valid photo ID may be required upon entry.

Youth

Youth (芳华, 2017), directed by Feng Xiaogang and adapted from a novel by Yan Geling, follows a group of young performers in a military art troupe during the 1970s and early 1980s in China. Through the intertwined lives of Liu Feng and He Xiaoping, the film explores friendship, love, exclusion, idealism, and the impact of historical change on ordinary people. Combining intimate storytelling with striking dance sequences and period detail, Youth offers a moving reflection on memory, growing up, and the hopes and disappointments of a generation shaped by a transformative era.

A Snake of June

Set in a rain-soaked, monochromatic blue Tokyo, A Snake of June follows a married woman whose carefully ordered life is disrupted when she becomes entangled in an unsettling game of surveillance, desire, and control. As voyeurism and psychological manipulation draw her into unfamiliar territory, the boundaries between fear, shame, and liberation begin to dissolve. Directed by Shin’ya Tsukamoto, the film combines striking visual style with an intense exploration of intimacy, identity, and urban alienation. A cult classic of contemporary Japanese cinema, it remains a singular and provocative meditation on self-discovery and transformation.

Please note that this film contains explicit sexual content and is intended for adult audiences (18+). A valid photo ID may be required upon entry.

Love

Love (2015), directed by Gaspar Noé, follows Murphy, a young American living in Paris, as he reflects on his passionate and turbulent relationship with Electra, the woman he once believed to be the love of his life. Triggered by a phone call, his memories unfold over the course of a day, revisiting moments of desire, intimacy, jealousy, and heartbreak. Through a non-linear narrative, the film explores the intensity of romantic obsession and the consequences of choices that alter lives forever. Love is a visually striking and emotionally charged meditation on relationships, memory, and loss. Chosen by Gaspar Noé for his French-Japanese background, Ken Yasumoto shaped the immersive sonic worlds of Enter the Void and Love.
