Curated Nature, a new temporary exhibition curated by Désiré Feuerle for The Feuerle Collection Silk Room. This installation juxtaposes unseen pieces from the institution’s permanent collection with natural objects, exploring both the artistic and the organic. Highlighted are a Chinese scholar table from the 16th-17th century, made of locust tree wood (Sophora japonica), and an Imperial Chinese “Fu” (福, good fortune) plaque with calligraphy by an unidentified Qing-Dynasty Emperor (18th century)—symbols of great blessing and luck. This exhibition introduces a series leading up to the 2026 10th Anniversary of The Feuerle Collection, each offering a unique, immersive experience into Désiré Feuerle’s curatorial vision and presenting unseen pieces of his collection.

Flush-Side Painting Table with Recessed Legs, 16th – 17th Century, Locust Tree Wood (Chinese Scholar Tree)
In ancient China, scholars and officials cherished the ideal: “To worry before the world worries, and to rejoice only after the world rejoices” (先天下之忧而忧，后天下之乐而乐).

The table’s minimalist design and rich patina exude refined elegance, reflecting the cultural heritage of Chinese design. Known scientifically as Sophora japonica, locust tree wood—the material from which this painting table is crafted—is a symbol of prosperity and wealth in Chinese culture.

The proverb “A locust tree in front of the door either attracts treasure or brings in wealth” (门前一棵槐，不是招宝，就是进财) underscores its significance.

Its dense, durable wood, though challenging to work with, has been prized in traditional Chinese craftsmanship for centuries, making the scholar table valuable not only for its function and design but also for the special material from which it is made, and conveying a feeling of creative abundance.

Imperial “Fu“ Plaque: Good Fortune

The “Fu” (福) plaque features calligraphy by an unidentified Qing Dynasty Emperor, symbolizing great blessing and luck.
